Seam-as-you go

I came across this a few days ago and thought it was pretty interesting with a lot of possible variations. So far I have only tried 15-stitch panels but I'm sure you can make them wider. This is knitted using the holding position but without wrapping.

HOW TO:

Because the weighted hem will very quickly become lop-sided and have to be removed, this is a good candidate for hanging a rag hem (short piece of knitting, bound off at bottom and top) and using only claw weights. Otherwise, use the short weighted hem, knit a few rows with waste yarn and an extra row with ravel cord, removing and replacing the weighted hem with claw weights when needed . Move claw weights as necessary to balance stitches on needles.

Needle Setup is like this:

E-wrap cast-on 15 needles from left to right, forming last "e" off needle with yarn behind instead of in front of it, hang on last needle. This will lock last "e".

Row 1: COR Knit
Row 2: COL Put needles 1-14 into HP. Knit needle 15.
Row 3: COR In one continuous move, pull back needle 14 until yarn slides off over closed latch and drops under it, then push it to forward working position, opening latch with thumb. Yarn is between needle 14 and needle 13. Knit.
Row 4: COL Bring needle 13 to FWP, latch open. Knit.
Row 5-15: COR As in Row 3 above, whenever carriage is on the right side, pull the next needle back until yarn slides off over closed latch and drops under it, then push to forward working position, opening latch with thumb. Knit. Whenever carriage is on left side, bring next needle from holding into FWP position, making sure latch is open. Knit.

Row 16: COL Bring last needle to FWP, knit.
Row 17-20: Knit.

Row 21: COR Put needle 15 into HP. Knit.
Row 22: COL With thumb, hold yarn against bed above and to right of needle 14 and push needle 14 to HP under yarn. Knit.
Row 23: COR Needle 13 to HP. Knit.
Row 24-34 COL As in Row 22 above, whenever carriage is on left side, with thumb hold yarn against bed above and to right of next needle and push needle to HP under yarn. Knit. Whenever carriage is on right side, bring next needle to HP.

Row 35: COR Push all needles back to FWP with latches open. Knit.
Row 36: COL Knit.

Row 37: COR Put needles 2-15 into HP. Knit needle 1.
Row 38: COL In one continuous move, pull back needle 2 until yarn slides off over closed latch and drops under it, then push it to forward working position, opening latch with thumb. Yarn is between needle 2 and 3. Knit.
Row 39: COR Push needle 3 to FWP, latch open. Knit.
Row 40-50: COL As in Row 38 above, whenever carriage is on the left side, pull the next needle back until yarn slides off over closed latch and drops under it, then push to forward working position, opening latch with thumb. Knit. Whenever carriage is on the right side, bring next needle from holding into FWP position, making sure latch is open. Knit.

Row 51: COR Bring needle 15 to FWP, latch open. Knit
Row 52-55: COL Knit.

Row 56: COL Put needle 1 into HP. Knit.
Row 57: COR With thumb, hold yarn against bed to the left and above needle 2 and bring needle 2 to HP under yarn. Knit.
Row 58: COL Put needle 3 into HP. Knit.
Row 58-69: COR As in Row 57 above, whenever carriage is on the right side, with thumb hold yarn against bed to the left and above next needle and bring needle to HP under yarn. Knit. Whenever carriage is on the left side, bring next needle to HP. Knit.

Row 70: COL Push needles 1-14 back to FWP, latches open. Knit.

Repeat Rows 1-70 throughout to desired length of panel, ending with Row 1. Bind off. Join this and all consecutive panels to the next panel as it is being knitted by the seam-as-you-go method. Click on link for details about how to join panels.
